Our history is filled with tales of selfless, brave people who made a difference. This collection of stories tells of the extraordinary contribution of thirteen ordinary West Cork women, that helped to change the course of history and led to the founding of the Irish State. These stories, collected by Karen Minihan, have often been ignored and uncelebrated. They show how women have been reticent to speak of their experiences and how they stoically and bravely got on with the job in hand. Names are familiar, places known, but these stories are fresh and, in some cases, have never been told before. Along with the collection is a short play, Home Rules, which is inspired by the life of Rose O’Connell (though influenced by all thirteen women), and a poem Rianta / Impressions.
